BIOGRAPHY
He was born on the 23rd of January 1936 in Santibáñez Zarzaguda, Burgos; a place which shaped his character and from which he has adopted his artistic name.
He lived in this village for the first ten years of his life; where at an early age, he already displayed an artistic sensitivity and curiosity, questioning the effect of light, volume and colour in the nature and life that surrounded him. And all the above in a harsh post-war rural context in which a sense of aesthetics, beauty, and art had little place.
The family moved to Burgos where he attended his first drawing and painting classes in the Burgos Provincial School.
At the age of 20, he realised that he needed to move to Madrid in order to increase his artistic skills. Due to his vocation, Eladio Gª de Santibáñez has had no other choice, throughout his life, than to inevitably depart in search of artistic knowledge and beauty. And this is what motivated him to establish his residence in a big city.
From his studio in the Plaza del 2 de Mayo, he participated in the bohemian lifestyle, attending classes in the Círculo de Bellas Artes (Madrid Fine Arts Association), where he diligently visited the masters of El Prado Museum and was nourished by the new ideas which emerged and arrived in Madrid such as the members of El Paso Group.
In 1962, he moved to Paris for a period in order to explore and participate in the city’s artistic lifestyle.
Upon his return, he definitively established his residence in Madrid and in his maturity, he set up his studio in a large house in La Alcarria where he not only continued to work but which he converted into a museum and the permanent exhibit of his artwork.
